2019 is a massive year for The Lion King. Not only is it going to hit the cinema screens with a Live action version. But the UK stage production celebrates it’s 20th year. So it is fantastic news that Disney’s The Lion King is coming to Bristol Hippodrome this autumn.

We were invited along to the press launch ahead of The Lion King’s residence at Bristol Hippodrome. It gave the audience a real insight of the huge scale of planning that went into this production. Julie Taymor is the visionary behind The Lion King theatre production. Julie is not only responsible for directing but the mastermind behind the costumes including puppets and masks. Plus contributing to additional lyrics.

We heard details about the costume choices for each character. The choice of a wooden looking mask for Mufasa with a circular mane to symbolise the circle of life. Scar’s mask is very angular and Simba’s mask has no jaw line to symbolise that he is still growing as a character. Other great costumes included the headdresses of the ensemble, that were grass and symbolised life.

taging and props were explained in detail too, I can’t wait to see the gazelle buggy during the production at the Hippodrome later this year. Also as giraffes are my favourite animals, the stilt walkers will gracefully glide across the stage.

We were also treated to 3 songs from the show, as it was Valentine’s Day that we went to the launch, I think it is fair to say that ‘Can you feel the love tonight’ was very well received by the audience. The Lion King lyrics were written by the musical legends that are Elton John and Sir Tim Rice. Three songs that they wrote for the film were nominated for Academy Awards, ‘Can you feel the love tonight’ went on to win the prestigious award.
